I don’t know exactly why or how I got so involved in the Pittsburgh scene, especially since I’ve never even been to the city, but wow, do I love the music that’s been coming out of there. Take this little dude, for example: Roger Harvey aka Dandelion Snow. He’s 23 and has been doing this music thing for 9 years already. Alternative/folk and at times a little Bright Eyes-esque. Brilliant.
I have only encountered two vegans who were completely unpretenious and this guy’s one of them. So, you know, that’s a selling point, too. :)
He’s also in White Wives (http://lockandkeyco.bandcamp.com/album/situationist-ep) - that band I won’t shut up about, so check out their EP while you’re at it. More Dandelion Snow here: http://dandelionsnow.bandcamp.com/album/the-grand-scheme-of-things.
White Wives - Another City For a New Weekend
I love this band.
They’re playing the Beat Kitchen this Tuesday. Someone go with me? Please?
Indian Summer, Indian Summer by White Wives
You guys, someone please come with me tomorrow night to see them? I hate going to shows by myself.
The line-up alone is reason enough:
Their name comes from the Dutch Provo movement.
Dadaism, Eastern philosophy, Situationist International - these guys are smart and ridiculously well-read, and the lyrics reflect that. No love songs here, but don’t worry - there’s not really a political one, either. It’s all in the interpretation.
And, of course, they’re smart musically, too. I’m enough of a music nerd to recognize what’s different and new about what I’m hearing, but not enough of one to put it eloquently into words. I’ve tried a couple different ways to say it, but none of them made sense. So. Go listen to the record and go see them live (with me tomorrow!).
“One of the things I love about the Provo movement is the concept of politics being personal. We’re bringing that back and saying, ‘we can write these songs from our perspective. We can have a song that is about challenging the status quo, but it’s also about challenging yourself, or challenging your love life… you know, pushing yourself before you push others.’” -Chris #2
Great music, great lyrics, great people. Tomorrow at the Beat Kitchen.
“Hold up, girl, you watch Degrassi? OMG that show is the best! Lemme buy you a sandwich. No wait, how bout a milkshake? Roger’s mom didn’t write him a note so he can’t stay in the van by himself. Do you have a friend that can share a milkshake with him, too?”
Things like this make me want to move to Minneapolis.
I’m equal parts excited and embarrassed. Because cool! Roger liked my posts. And ohmygod. Roger saw my posts and I tend to fangirl and go on terribly written tangents about White Wives and Dandelion Snow/Bluebird Midwest… and then tag every post regarding those two with #and not just because I have a crush on roger.
